Adapt, Outlast

A post on Myspace from Rich: MLIW is breaking up

"As recent rumors have suggested, Iowa hardcore band Modern Life Is War is indeed calling it quits. Formed in late-2001, the group has released material with Equal Vision Records and Deathwish Inc., among others. Prior to disbanding, MLIW will tour the U.S. one last time with a final show slated for April 26th. Here's a statement from the band:"

"There is no disaster or dramatic situation behind the break-up. All past and current members of the band are still good friends and there is no bad blood. We just feel like it's the right time and would rather end things on our own terms than let our band become a ghost of what it was in the beginning or to be ripped apart by outside forces.

Our first show was on April 20th, 2002 in Tyler's parents basement. This makes our run as a band almost exactly six years. We want to send a huge thank you out to everyone who supported this band through thick and thin because you care about us as individuals, our music, our message or what we stand for as a band. We also want to thank all the people in the DIY/underground hardcore and punk scenes all over the country and world who work really hard and sacrifice a lot for little to no recognition or money because they love the music and message. I am really proud of all that we have accomplished but know that without the support of that community we would have never had a chance to tour and put out records for so many years. I don't want to get sentimental and there is no short way of wrapping up all my feelings about this band and these last six years. Above all... I hope we have made some people feel less alone and motivated them to think for themselves, be themselves and take action. Punk rock changed our lives. I hope we contributed something to keep the whole thing going. We are leaving soon... but The future is unwritten... so start writing it. Tour dates will be posted soon. Come sweat and scream and say goodbye to Modern life Is War."

I refuse to get all weird in this blog because thats just the way its going to be, but Im really bummed/ not at all suprized at this news. With the death of a family member, Tims leaving for NJ and Harm flying off to be with his fantastic fiance this isnt a shocker to me nor should it be to anyone. MLIW dispite my epic saga with Jeff is one of the best things to have ever happend to hardcore and in my eyes was one of the few bands keeping shit alive. They stuck to their own personal style and kept with their own pace and seemingly never gave a fuck what other people thought of their sound or personalities as a band or people. I will miss seeing those little jackasses running around drunk as skunks after shows, amazing conversations with them. I feel bad for the people who never got to meet them as individuals or see them play like I have since their first east coast tour so many years ago. I still to this day dont regret getting a MLIW tattoo dispite rumors and eventually will finish it when I feel the time is right. I just honestly feel like as retarded as this sounds that this will be the begining of a long winter for hardcore and Im just glad Im not as involved as I used to so I dont have to see the distruction and the collapse of this dying empire. The same 10 bands tour nonstop, theirs nothing new but I think I can speak for alot of kids when I say that going to a MLIW show was never a disapointment even though theyd play every 3 months basically on this coast at the same venue with the sames kids thrashing and bombarding the stages, you would expect the unexpected and its sad it will be gone. I honestly wasnt planning on going to any shows of theirs for a long time but I think Ill go to just this last one. On the bright side aleast Jeff will stop cheating on his girlfriend, right?
